A Filmmaker's Diary

Diary 8/13/99

Today it was down to Rob and I and we relaxed a bit after the busy week. We got some more general shots of Butte and interviewed Frank and a friend of his about genealogy.

We also visited a couple book stores and picked up some books. I bought a copy of The Story of Mary McLean, a book written by nineteen year old Butte resident in the year 1900. The book was written in a great poetic style and I think we may use some of it for voice overs, have Sam read some sections of it. Some of the earlier passages I read have to do with walking, and building a philosphy of life out of walking through barren stretches of 1900 Butte. In the evening we watched several hours of our rushes and felt very good about what we saw. The camera work looked good, even though we watched it on the monitor of the small Sony camera. Some dust spots left us a little concerned, but not so concerned to ruin the entire week.

We felt so enthusiastic that later, at the Irish Times bar, we talked about a Butte trilogy. We decided that the second film of the series would be about someone who came to Butte to party during St. Patrick's Day. The third might be about someone having to leave Butte.

We were feeling good about our work, the work of all our actors, and the entire past week. We went to bed early and a few hours later heard a knock on our door. Bleary, we said "What?" The voice on the other side of the door said, "I heard there was an orgy going on here." Rob got to the door and the person there said he had the wrong room.
