A Filmmaker's Diary

Diary 8/11

Today we began with our shoot at the World Museum of Mining, the huge collection of hills and buildings on the west side of Butte that hosts a huge collection of photos and items about Butte's past. First we shot scenes of Dan as Frank walking up to the Orphan Girl Mine head frame, and then walking around some of the mining implements arranged around there. Then we watched as a tour bus filled with Asian tourists pulled up and unloaded dozens of people.

We had to shoot scenes of Irene walking through the campus of the Museum, the recreated mining village, Hellroaring Gulch. We had to shoot these shots without getting any of the tourists who were filling the place in the background of any shots. Through sheer luck I did manage to get a number of shots, but ended up giving up in desperation as more tourists piled in.

Gerry Walter, the director of the Museum, was very helpful. She was a big fan of the concept of our film, and wanted to make sure that our actor outfitted as a miner walked past her so she could see him. We had her sign a location agreement, gave her $50 for use of the museum, and left it for other shooting.

Before lunch we shot the bench scene between Emily and Irene at a bench in front of the Butte Silver Bow municipal building. The scene went very smoothly and we had no problem with people walking by and getting in the way of shots.

After lunch we had planned to shoot all the scenes of Irene walking through the city, but just as we were heading out to shoot them, the rain began to pour. It poured and poured, and continued to do that, unlike the Montana rain storms that we had expected. It basically rained out our whole afternoons shooting. But this was the first interruption in our shooting schedule, which had been running about as smoothly as anyone could imagine.

We shot a few shots of Sam looking out of the Finlen lobby at the rain, and then finished the voice overs for Emily, Frank and Irene. The rain came harder and then softer into the evening, but around six we were able to get out with Sam to do a few shots of her walking around. We shot scenes of her discovering details in the buildings of Butte, and the wetness and greyness added to the mystery of these shots.

Also, as we were sitting around we watched some of the rushes. We had to watch them on the small built in monitor on the TRV 900 which made it difficult to really judge the shots. I was a little embarrassed by some of my exposures, but overall it looked from the footage like I would be able to edit something from it.

Rob and I walked around to find a place for dinner. While we were walking we saw a man arrested by police and then two fire trucks drive up because of an electrical emergency in one of the older and unoccupied buildings in Uptown. We then had dinner at the brew pub in the lobby of the Metals Bank building where we met Sam's friend Deb, who had grown up in Butte. It was interesting hearing about the project through her eyes, as someone from this place, who hated it and wanted to get away from it when she was in high school, and still, to this day. We were so transfixed and intrigued by this place, meanwhile, and thought it the greatest adventure to spend two weeks here. We then went back to our hotel rooms to shoot an interview with her about her genealogy.

Tonight was Kristine and Dan's last night. Everyone will be waking up early. For Dan and Kristine, it is to leave Butte. For Sam and Rob and I it will be to take a trip to Anaconda so I can tape Sam riding the bus into Butte.
