South High VOICES 2016-2017

(Values, Options, Issues and Choices Explored in Society)

Student-produced documentaries at South High

I have been helping students at Minneapolis South High create documentaries that explore social issues for nearly twenty years.

The VOICES class incorporates the subjects of social studies, English, and media studies. Students who take the class are encouraged to explore and engage in issues in the world today. In addition to course work on society and expression, students learn about photography, radio, and documentary film production.

The Voices class is led by South High teachers Delainia Haug and Laura Lanik. In addition to the day to day schoolwork, the teachers arrange for the class to learn from me in a residency in which I guide the students through the production of a documentary film.

The VOICES program receives funding from the South High Foundation.

Here are the documentaries made by this year's VOICES class.

Disenfranchised

Should felons be allowed to fully reintegrate into society by having their voting rights restored after they serve their time? How is this issue disenfranchising people of color and affecting election outcomes in America?

You’re Honoring Who?

Indigenous people continue to be disrespected by American sports teams who use sacred Native American cultural symbols and offensive language for their mascots.

Something Here Does Not Belong

A film highlighting the threats to funding and support for crucial women’s reproductive health care services, intensified by the recent presidential election.

Black

How does institutional racism influence the African American male identity? Are there alternative narratives for these young men?

Change the Outcome

While medicine can be very helpful in treating a variety of health problems, there is a need to explore more holistic options, especially for youth.

Food in the City

Small, locally owned restaurants allow immigrant communities to stay connected to their roots and provide Minneapolis residents with delicious, authentic food options and cultural experiences.

Muslims in America

Ignorance and stereotyping of Islam and Muslim people keeps many of us from recognizing the positive contributions of this group in our community. Get to know a Muslim.

Outspoken

There are many ways protest allows young people to participate in the political process. Here at South High, student voice is an important part of learning to be civically engaged.
